Florida Hip Hop: Sol.iLLaquists Of Sound

Florida's Sol.iL Laquists Of Sound
A Music X-Press Magazine Feature by Jason Cangialosi

The atmospheric and melodic lyrics flow on top experimental, jazzy beats for this homegrown Florida troupe of intellectual hip-hop artists. It's a little bit Fugees, a tad Drum 'N' Bass, and rhymes you've got to replay over and over to grasp the full message. Imagine the best of a thoughtful soul cafe open-mic night wrapped in the intensity of a sound scorched club.

Sol.iL Laquists of Sound is comprised of a dynamic collective of artists and MCs. Swamburger, originally out of Chicago, is lead MC for the group and douses the mic in a fiery performance. He's done work with DJ Spinna out of Brooklyn, NY, as well as released his own tracks on Eighth Dimension. Alexandrah, also originally out of Chicago, is a powerful lead vocalist, but also spreads her love into the group's graphic design and video editing. On back up vocals and percussion is New York born, Tonya Combs, or Bondi. Hailing from Pennsylvania, artist and producer, DiViNCi has got the goods for composing invigorating grooves with an energy that perks the mind and occasionally races the heart.

After everyone in the group eventually migrated to the Orlando music scene, SOS formulated an undeniable mixture of Hip Hop, Electronica and Soul. With five previous releases out there, including, N B'Tween World, 4 Student Coun'Sol (Running From Precedence), Sol.iL Laquists Live: The Truth Don't Need Support, Tour De SoliLLa '05, their latest is a full debut album, As If We Existed. Much comes across in the depth of the music and lyrics and reveals a repertoire that has grown extensively.

As the group describes, their name is a play on words revealing individuals in search of true identity through the process of sharing their art with audiences. This is something that shines closely to the Yoga concept of Namaste, where one recognizes the inner light of another in greeting or parting. Yoga, the word itself meaning Union, falls in line conceptually with the group's common beliefs and knowledge of Vegan lifestyles, Artistic expression, science and forms of healing. All of this culminates into a message that the group spreads, but also explores for their intellect, making it a shared experience for both listener (audience) and artist.

SOS also promotes an interactive presence with their fans, having hosted a music video making contest. Taking any song from their album, As If We Existed, aspiring filmmakers explored the vast region of ideas and inspiration that the group's music reflects. The contest ended March 20th, 2007, but the group continues many projects, including a new album and a Solilla Center for Creative Kids in Orlando, FL. According to Alexandrah, "it is much-needed center for creativity in Orlando....It will be built from the ground up, made of recycled materials, solar/wind powered, and very accessible to anyone interested."
