Is Yuwie a Pyramid Scam?
Is Yuwie.com just another pyramid scam disguised under the facade of Social Networking? Do we really care if it is? I've read a lot of blogs and message boards on the Web after doing a general search for "Yuwie" on Google. What turned up is a lot of people questioning what the site is about, and most asking, "is it a scam?" Other people posted their earnings from joining Yuwie on their blog, as testament to a successful Yuwie experience. While Yuwie is designed like a Pyramid scheme, where it's all about growing your referral tree, it's all free. So you can't technically call it a scam. You exchange your time, and the more effort you put in, the more money you get. The only thing you lose is your time. What turns a lot of people off from Yuwie is there is a lot of Scam-like promotional tactics used and the look of the site is generally tacky, like one big giant ad for a work at home get rich quick scam, but with sparkley glitter and MySpace-like graphics. Those familiar with the web will recognize comments or advertising on the site with phrases like "Want to know how I....." (insert any generic spam here, "got a bigger penis", "made thousands by reading e-mails"), and there is a ton of that nonsense on Yuwie, but it's everywhere on the web no less. One thought though, the Internet has developed some of the most targeted marketing and promotions since the dawn of the advertising age. So, that said, on sites like MySpace, you see a lot of dating and personals services advertised, and music or film related promotions. Hence what are people doing on MySpace, talking dirty, listening to music and watching videos. So advertisers take note and target their marketing. What are people doing on Yuwie? While some people are just sharing laughs with friends, old and new, or networking, there is a glut of get rich quick tactics posted all over place. So advertisers take note of the greatest concentration on the site; that being boosting your earning potential, and hence, they promote a bunch of Internet Scams to users. If someone joined the site to make a little money, then for it to be worth while, they need referrals. This requires you to convert your friends from other social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook, IMEEM, Friendster; whatever, or promote it all over the web to get people to join. You've now become a Spam-artist. Most people are just enjoying the social aspects of the site, but probably signed up based on Yuwie's pitch or angle to make money. Yuwie is not better than other Social Networking sites, it has no focus, other than being a referral based, profit driven network. So no matter who you are on Yuwie, you were sold on the idea to make money. My issue comes with what is the future of that? Pyramid scams never last, so unless Yuwie finds some way to be original in it's content area, it will collapse.

With admitted hypocrisy, I do have a profile page on Yuwie.com, and actually discovered Qassia through Yuwie. It is also true that I have meet some interesting people through the site. I am merely questioning the future of Yuwie's focus here.
