Moral Philosophy: Garret Hardin's "Tragedy of the Commons"
By Jason Cangialosi of Associated Content
Moral Philosophy: Ethics from Socrates to Sex A Collection of Ethical Theories in a Nutshell as a Springboard to Moral Philosophy. This entry takes a brief look at the ethics of ecology with a theory presented by ecologist Garrett Hardin. Though primarily an ecologist, Hardin's broad writings on overpopulation tackled highly controversial issues within a environmental, social and biological approach. This gave his works, especially in his landmark "Tragedy of the Commons", a philosophical reach. Garret Hardin - The Tragedy of the Commons (1968) Based on his example of the herdsman adding cattle, as rational beings we all want to maximize our gain by adding to our potential profit, but this has a negative side effect. If we are all using what is available to us, and want to profit from its use, then the resource can be diminished with none left for any. In the case of the herdsman, the cattle would overgraze by his choice to add more cattle, and all herds will be at a loss. In essence Hardin's arguments stand as a criticism of Adam Smith's theories in capitalism. That being the "invisible hand" theory, which proposed that if we all acted in specialized, selfish economic means, the "invisible hand" of the market would take care of us. In such a system, all members want to profit fully and when resources are concerned there is no regard for others involved. This classic economic theory at the heart of capitalism has bore much blame in the depletion of what is naturally available, including water, land, oil and other natural resources. Garrett Hardin's "Tragedy of the Commons" attempts to address this issue with an ethical theory.
