Review of The Guerilla Guide to the Music Business

You, too, can speak the slang of the savvy in the music business with The Guerilla Guide to the Music Business, by Sarah Davis and David Laing. The authors have compiled a slick, quick and easy read that will arm you with the insider knowledge so many often lack when getting started in the music business. This void of insider knowledge you may have is apparent for obvious reasons; you don't know jack unless you've been working in the industry for years. The content of this book will put you several years ahead of the game. It is intended for the absolute newbie or more likely the growing novice looking for the next step.

This book would be great airplane reading on your way to something like the Winter Music Conference or the CMJ Music Marathon, if you should be so fortunate to go. The Guerilla Guide will stock your brain with an "in the know" mentality giving you confidence to talk shop over drinks with promoters, producers and musicians alike. The book really grasps the new music industry, respectively incorporating new technology and the Internet.

Davis and Laing cover the basics like "DIY" promotion and gigs, recording and important technical aspects, legalities and business responsibilities. They also offer some bonus material like how to get into writing music for Video Games and choosing the right educational route. The book is compact, but loaded with tips; valuable ones, stuff you may need to know, like a section on remixing from the group Hybrid, and the background of College Radio Stations, which is one of the few last bastions of Indie music.

The cover indiscreetly boosts that this is a book "About the music business, by people in the music business", and it lives up to it. Davis and Laing are more of compiling editors to which they developed a consensus from many different professionals involved with different areas. There are plenty of books on the shelves that offer how-to status in the music business, but I have not seen one that incorporates Indie music, commercial pop and the often overlooked Dance scene all in one. Pick one up if you are serious about getting started in music or looking to advance yourself. It's one of those books that you keep close by as a quick access handbook. It shouldn't be confused with Bob Baker's Guerrilla Music Marketing Handbook, but is on par with Baker's other Music Business books like MySpace Music Marketing and Unleash the Artist Within, as well as the Indie Renegade's, 7 Key Code System.
